History of Daigoji
Daigoji is a ShingonBuddhist temple complex in Kyoto (ancient Heiankyo), Japan, which was founded in 874 CE by the scholar monk Shobo (aka Rigen Daishi). As part of the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto”, it is designated as a World Heritage Site. The five-storey pagoda at Daigoji temple was built in 951 and is the oldest building in Kyoto. It was one of few buildings to survive the Onin War in the 15th century.
How do you get to Daigoji Temple?
Daigoji Temple is located a 15 minute walk or short bus ride by community bus number 4 (210 yen, every 30 minutes) from Daigo Station along the Tozai Subway Line. From Kyoto Station, take a JR train to Yamashina Station (5 minutes, 190 yen) and transfer to the Tozai Subway Line (8 minutes, 260 yen).
