The peace talks failed and as the situation in Sri Lanka deteriorated so did Balasingham’s health. He was diagnosed with bile duct cancer and given 6–8 weeks to live. The cancer spread to his liver, lungs, abdomen and bones. Balasingham died on 14 December 2006 at his home in South London.
