What needs to be on the check for a passport?
Check must be made payable to “US Department of State.” It must be written as “US Department of State” – do not abbreviate. Amount must be written out in full. $170 should be written as “One Hundred Seventy and 00/100.” Write applicant’s full name and date of birth on the memo line of the check or money order.

Can I renew my passport at the post office?
Thousands of Post Offices™ accept first-time passport applications for the U.S. Department of State. Most of those locations can also take your passport photo. If you don’t meet all the renewal requirements, you’ll need to go to a Post Office in person and do a new, first-time passport application.
Do I need to send my old passport when renewing?
Yes, in most cases, we will return the old, canceled passport to you. The old passport may be sent separately from your new passport. We recommend keeping your old passport in a safe place as it is considered proof of your U.S. citizenship.

How long does it take to renew a passport right now?

When should you renew your passport before it expires?
You can apply for a new passport up to 12 months before your current passport expires. Please note that if you apply for a new passport before your current passport expires, the unused validity period of your current passport will not be transferred to your new passport.
